  1. - music clear and matches the opening
    - editing of the fall and music stopping at exact point is good
    - continuity is good

-background noise could have been blocked out.

  2. The way that the characters are not shown at the beginning but other aspects of them are, help the extreme close up of the main characters face stand out even more.

The non-diegetic music was a good choice and the way it stops when she falls and hits the ground is very effective!

The iconography is excellent throughout the opening; such as the lip gloss for the popular girl and the big glasses for the geeky girl, which are common things people associate with these characters.

We like the titles used and the way the title of the film stands out from the rest and it is also looks like an already made teen romance.

A range of accurate camera shots and camera movements have been used which has helped to portray the genre, such as the tilt up the jock character.

The only thing that our group would change would be the colours and the clothes of the popular girl. The fact she is blonde helps but it would of been more stereotypical if she was wearing pinks and bright colours.

Overall, our group thinks this opening is good quality and very well produced.

  3. Positives:
    - non-diegetic music ends well
    - close ups of characters getting ready introduces characters well
    - good use of stereotypes
    - can identify the lead character well from the extreme close up at the beginning

    Improvements:
    - actors names are on screen for different lengths of times
    - background noises change; disrupts the continuity

  4. My group really wanted to create a sense of disruption in our opening as we felt that not only would this create an enigma and urge people on to want to watch the whole film, it would captivate the attention of the audience and give them an understanding of what this character (the geek) was about to go through. We felt that the best way to embody this was by editing the music to stop just as the geek hit the floor. We thought that this would show that something drastic had occurred and so I’m glad that this particular edit was noticed and appreciated.
Our initial intention was for the ‘bitch’ to wear a pink skirt rather than the black one she did. This is because pink clothing is typically seen worn by characters of our chosen genre as it connotes childlikeness and shows how feminine the ‘bitch’ character is. However, we chose not to make the ‘bitch’ wear this colour because we wanted to challenge this convention. In making her wear all black, it made her appear mysterious and dangerous therefore portraying her as a ‘bad’ character.
We used the background noise in order to create a sense of verisimilitude as the setting was a school and so it was expected that we heard sounds of people. However, we could have made the background noise quieter in order for the main characters to be heard more clearly.

  5. We really like the difference when it shows the different characters getting ready and how it doesn’t actually show you who the characters are until you get to the school. We like how the music stops as soon as the main character gets knocked on the floor. However, when you see the shots of the boy and girl, and the corridor in which she has just walked down, the two other bullies are not their, but surely they wouldn’t haven’t moved, or would be moving away. Other than that, we really like how this opening is.

  6. PROS =

    - The music corresponds well with the actions on screen; for example a
bang is used at the same time a character falls down.

    - We think the opening suits the genre very well because the chaacters
are youthful, the music is upbeat, and the setting is typical for a
    teen rom/com.

    - Stock characters are made obvious from the beginning i.e. Geek, Bitch.

    - Camera shots are used effectively to create continuity.

    CONS =

    - We thought as a group that the clarity of the voiceover could have
been improved so it was easier to understand and hear.
